Francis Kenneth - Into the Wild

“A scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.”

My parents are firm believers in scouting and the way it gives you tools that you can use for the rest of your life. They were in the program as a kids, so naturally, they made my siblings and I join too.

I started off in cub scouts, which was pretty much just fun and games. Okay, there was a little camping and hiking involved, but from what I remember, we just played and had a good time.

When you hit the tender age of 11 years old or complete the 5th grade, you move onto Boy Scouts. This is where and when you really learn your basics of the outdoors. In all honesty, I like to think that this where I learned my core fundamentals on being independent and learning the importance of responsibility. You also make some life long friends along the way, so it’s a win-win. We went on a buttload (yes, that’s an actual unit of measurement) of camps, hikes and events. The most memorable were kayaking and camping around Vancouver Island in Canada, hiking Mt. Baldy, and putting American flags on the graves of war Veterans at Green Hills Memorial.

I went through the ranks rather quickly and got “Eagle Scout” (highest you can get) when I was 14. I wanted to get my Dad off my back, so he would stop nagging me about it. At the time, I hated wearing the uniform around (girls didn’t find them attractive) and I disliked a lot of the events that I felt were a waste of time (Pancake Breakfast), but I never realized that these things were just as important in my growth and development.

I learned enough from my experiences in scouting to last me a lifetime. If there’s one thing I had to choose that was most important, it was to always “be prepared.”
