SINK OR SWIM

Francis Kenneth - Sink or Swim

“Sometimes when you see the graffiti on the freeway, you think it’s graffiti, but it’s not. It’s art.”

Believe it or not, these were the exact words one of the kids at my high school said during his senior speech. I know that sounds like a ridiculously blunt, poorly constructed sentence, and I was just as shocked to find out that it was good enough for a passing grade considering his content and delivery, but that’s neither here nor there. I think everyone in the room, myself included, understood the point he was trying to get across. So much so, that his speech was the only one I remember from that day.

Agree or disagree, graffiti is a growing and developing art form, and just like other artistic fields, there’s good and bad pieces of “graff.” Unfortunately, it has a bad rep in the public eye, but there’s so much to be learned from this misunderstood culture. What I appreciate about it the most is that it has no boundaries (both literally and figuratively). No rules.

I challenge you to keep your eyes open, some of the best views are the ones you’re overlooking.
