WINE COUNTRY

Last month, Sly and I took a trip up to NorCal to visit my godson, Jae-Sun Bayani. His dad, JJ, was one of my best friends from my days in the Navy, and his mom, Ashley, was recently stationed at Travis Chair Force Base in Vacaville, which is between Oakland and Sacramento. Yeah, I had no idea this city existed either. They were originally supposed to be somewhere out in Alaska, but like all things in the military, there was a change of plans. I’m pretty sure they’d rather be here in “Cali” anyways.

That being said, it rained the entire time we were there, and I couldn’t have been happier about that. I LOVE RAIN. The first of the three days we spent up there was in Napa Valley. I’m not a wine connoisseur by any means, but I LOVE DRINKING, and I’ve never been wine tasting. We didn’t have any reservations or any concrete plans in general, so we just drove out and played it by ear. We started at an amazing Spanish inspired tapas-style restaurant called Zuzu, and sweet baby Jesus, was that place good. Might I add, 1-year old Jae ate and liked a lot of the food, but for some reason, he goes insane for ice (the ones in your water to be specific). Either way, I highly recommend the lamb shanks!

Our second stop was at winery that was already booked for the day, so we Yelped one that took walk-ins, which ended up being Artesa. As you can see from the photos, the views were breathtaking. Everything was so lush and green, the moisture from the rain really brought out the surroundings, and best of all, the artwork and architecture was simply stunning. The wine tasting itself was new, different, but a nice experience to say the least. Good enough for me to do it again when I go back up at the end of the school semester. Our favorite (mine and JJ’s since Sly had to drive and babysit while we got white girl wasted) was the Chardonnay, and it wasn’t even close. I guess the Sauvignon Blanc would be a distant second. After several drinks, we decided it was time to head back and have dinner with Ashley, who had to work the entire time we were there.

We ended the night eating dinner at an Indian restaurant called Clay Oven Bar and Grill, which surprisingly, had the highest Yelp ratings in the area. SO RANDOM. I had the lamb tikka masala (I LOVE LAMB), which was phenomenal and highly recommended if, for some reason, you’re in Vacaville.

Stay tuned for day two of our trip!
