HELLBENT

At last, the final set of photos from our Vacaville trip! Besides visiting Ashley at Travis Air Force, and eating soul food at Chez Soulice cream at Fenton’s Creamery, and playing with Jae at Nut Tree Family Park, this was the day we went home. So, instead of talking about all of that, I want to shift my focus on an issue that I feel is more pressing.

Since the start of this blog, I’ve, more or less, avoided writing about who I am. So, I think it’s time I let all of you in on a little something about me. I’m not going to sit here and waste time, so I’ll just go ahead and lay it all out. I’m atheist.

Now, before you freak out, and decide on whether or not this changes what you think of me, let me explain. Like most Filipinos, I was born and raised Catholic. That includes the sacraments of baptism, first communion, and confirmation. If you don’t know what any of that is, click here. I went to Catholic school from sixth to eleventh grade. I was an alter boy. I played drums for different churches. I went on religious retreats, attended those youth group programs, and volunteered feeding and clothing the homeless through Christians Services. The list goes on. I guess you can say I spent a lot of time being involved in my faith.

It wasn’t until I joined the US Navy that any of it really mattered or made a difference. In the first five years of service, my spirituality was at an all time high. I was constantly praying like there was no tomorrow. I would argue that it got me through the rough patches in my short-lived military career. I mean, there were some pretty damn lonely moments that I literally had no one to talk to. So, I fell back on what I knew. It was comforting. It was all I had.

You’re probably wondering what in the hell happened? In short, I did what most believers never bother to do. I read the Bible. Yes, I know that sounds ridiculous, but seriously, read that thing cover to cover. For better or worse, you’ll be a “changed man” (or woman). If you want to know more about any of this, I’ll be more than glad to open up about it. Until then, I’ll let you do you, boo boo.

If there’s anything that I want you to take away from all of this, it’s the overwhelming feeling that I believe in myself. I believe in you. I believe in us.
